School Era
Snowden Ashford designed the school in 1911 in the Elizabethan Revival style. In 1911, the school opened with its name honoring Episcopal priest Rev. Alexander Crummell. Crummell was an activist and educator and the founder of the American Negro Academy
It cost only $44,987.00 to build the school.
It closed in 1977.
Today
After the school closed, the building went through a phase of being used as a car dealership and daycare. Then DC bought the building to store their tour buses. The work done on the building at this time included paved parking lots and a new fence around the property. However, this ended when the organization Empower DC sued DC.
It is waiting silently to be possible redeveoped by another company.
It sits on the African American Heritage Trail in D.C.
