RUNNING INTO HISTORY
Hiking to the 1819 US Capitol stones hidden away in the woods of DC.
After hearing legends of the 1819 US Capitol stones hidden in the woods of DC, I decided to go looking for them. These stones were used to re-build the US capitol after it was torched by the British troops in the War of 1812. Architect of the Capitol
Stone Preservation on Capitol Hill
Stone preservation across Capitol Hill is a top priority for the Architect of the Capitol, as nearly every building is enveloped in stone, and all have problems. Weather, age and deferred maintenance are destroying many of the finer details of these awe-inspiring stone edifices and causing safety concerns. Addressing this problem across the Capitol campus takes a team of historic preservationists, structural engineers and stonemasons. Numerous projects are underway, or planned, to restore and preserve these historic buildings. Learn more at https://www.aoc.gov/stone. ----- ABOUT US The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) is rooted in a tradition of unique craftsmanship and ingenuity. Tracing its beginnings to the laying of the #USCapitol cornerstone in 1793, the AOC is responsible for the operations and care of more than 18.4 million square feet of facilities, 570 acres of grounds and thousands of works of art. The Capitol campus is home to 30,000 daily occupants and hosts more than 3 million visitors annually. Today, there are more than 2,000 AOC employees serving around the clock in diverse roles to maintain and preserve the buildings and grounds. Iconic landmarks under our care include the U.S. Capitol, Capitol Grounds, Capitol Visitor Center (@visitthecapitol), House office buildings, Library of Congress, Senate office buildings, Supreme Court buildings and @UnitedStatesBotanicGarden. ----- JOIN OUR TEAM Architect of the Capitol job opportunities are listed at https://www.aoc.gov/jobs. The Capitol Stones At Rock Creek Park D.C.
During the 1958 renovation of the U.S. Capitol, the architect of the project had hundreds of marble blocks and sandstone removed from the building. Most of the removed pieces dated back to the building's original construction, which ultimately made it hard to lawfully dispose or sell the removed items. Not quite sure on what to do with the removed stones, the architect quietly had the stones piled up behind a maintenance shed in Rock Creek Park and abandon them. To this day, the beautiful marble blocks and sandstones remain abandoned in the park. The location of the stones are not marked on the park map, but can be found on a small hidden off the beaten path.
