McMillan Sand Filtration Site

In this episode of How It Works, we examine the history and current operations of the Washington Aqueduct, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers mission that supplies water to Washington D.C. and surrounding communities.

City officials these days seem to stop for nothing when seeking to hook up developer buddies with public assets. In the case of McMillan Park, 25 acres of open-air public space with an historic vaulted water system below, developers are salivating over a deal where they would get this land for less then nothing. In order to sell this bad deal, the director of the Office of Planning superfluously mischaracterizes the shape of the park and underground vaults, describing the site as if it is so deteriorated that people playing soccer on the site would cause the site to collapse. The McMillan Sand Filtration Site is one of Washington, DC's most conspicuous mysteries: a fenced-off 25-acre grassy plain just over 2 miles north of Capitol Hill, marked by rows of tall concrete.
